Instructions: Unscramble each of the words below to complete this quotation by Horace Mann. Letters placed in colored squares will complete a specific letter somewhere in the quote. Keep in mind that there may be multiple words that can be created by any single group of letters, but generally only one of those will be correct for the purposes of completing the quote. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MixUp puzzle?
A MixUp is a type of word puzzle where you must unscramble words to decipher a "master quotation". Players will start by rearranging as many letter groupings as possible into individual words. In each of those words is a "special" square - whatever letter is written into that square will also appear in the quotation at the top of the page. As more words are unscrambled, more letters will appear in the quotation. The player can then use basic logic skills to determine which letters are still missing in the quotation, and use this information to help them unscramble the remaining letter groupings. The puzzle is won once the master quotation is completed and verified.
What do the difficulty ratings mean?
Each player has the option to play an Easy, Challenging or Insane MixUp. The rating level is used to determine what words will need to be unscrambled in order to complete the puzzle. An Easy game will generally have common-usage (i.e. age 10 and up) words between 5 and 7 letters in length. Challenging puzzles will have a few more difficult words thrown in, and words can be up to eight letters long. Finally, Insane puzzles will pull words from all levels of difficulty, including many words not in everyday usage. These can be anywhere from five to nine letters in length. (There's a reason why its called Insane!)
I unscrambled all the words but the quotation makes no sense!
Remember, part of the challenge of MixUps is that each group of scrambled letters may be able to form two or three or even four different words! You won't know which is right until the master quotation starts to get filled in. If the quotation has misspelled words, then one or more of your MixUps is incorrect. Don't be discouraged! A normal game will often require two or more words to be unscrambled in a different way before the final quotation is successfully revealed.
How many puzzles are there?
We have a database of over a thousand unique MixUp puzzles, and its growing every day. If by chance you happen to come across a puzzle you've already done in the past, just start another game and chances are very good it will be brand new to you.
What's with all these -our, -ise and other misspelled words???
In order to make the game palatable to English speakers in not only the United States but also Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and all over the world, we've included both American-English and British-English spelling variations in our word puzzles. This means that you may get CRITICIZE one day and CRITICISE the next, or RUMOR/RUMOUR, COLOR/COLOUR, etc. There are also some words in British English (aubergine and courgettes are two good examples) which are not commonly used in American English, and vice-versa. For most of our users, though, this shouldn't pose any serious problem.
I can't unscramble XXXXXXXX - is this an error?
Well, no software is ever 100% perfect, but to date we've yet to see a spelling error creep into our MixUps. There probably is a word in those letters, you're just not seeing it. If you're completely flustered and just want to know what the word is, you can click here to unscramble any letter grouping.
How can I help support MixUps?
All we ask is that you help spread the word about MixUps to friends and family. If you'd like to include a link to us on your website, that'd be great! And if you're feeling exceptionally generous, why not visit the sponsors who advertise on this site. We get a few cents for each click, and that helps us pay for server and software upgrades, as well as the occasional six-pack of Mountain Dew. (Yes, sometimes we splurge on ourselves...)
